Meet Robin
Bad Ass Mother Birther
Weaving kick ass labour support and advocacy for Cold Lake and surrounding areas
"I don't birth like that"
He says as I am being uncooperative
In putting my feet in the stirrups
"No, I don't birth like that"
I say as I turn around and get on hands and knees
He gets flustered at my perceived slight and leaves the room
Two pushes later and I catch my own baby
and I wonder why we're here, anyways
He's conflated care with control, and in doing so,
Has forgotten that birth is something you do,
Not something that is done to you
I'm sorry I'm whining and moving around so much
I catch myself saying to her
"No. you are listening to your body. Keep going,"
She says as she quietly bears witness,
Knowing she has walked into my sacred birth space
She believes in me and, in doing so,
I remember to believe in myself
Whether I'm telling the first disempowering story or the second redemptive one,
Most people say, "All that matters is your baby is healthy."
Fuck that. A healthy baby is the bare minimum.
We can do better, and that's where I come in.
As your medical provider protects you and your baby physically,
I protect your emotional and psychological safety
Let's collaborate together to honour both your sacred birth space
and your individual process and unique needs
Let's have you centered, heard, seen, and respected as the expert you are on your body and your birth.
A Crash Course on Me
A Crash Course on Me
I have been trained through three separate doula organizations: DONA International, CAPPA, and DTI. (I think my imposter syndrome is gone, now, finally!)
I worked for five years at a woman-owned, feminist sex shop. I can talk to anyone about anything!
I have an undergrad in psychology.
I'm a mom of three little boys.
I have experience working with pregnant women navigating substance use and houselessness.
I read tarot, follow the moon, and create simple rituals. Basically, I'm your friendly neighborhood witch.
I believe swearing is a woman's birthright. You might hear me say fuck, a bit.
With all of my personal, educational, and work experience, there is nothing you can say that will shock me. I'm here for you, 100%.
Not Your Grandma's Birth Doula Service
-
You are Centered
I provide individualized care according to your unique situation, personality, desires, and "hell no's". I'm here for you - this is YOUR birth story. I'll help you shove your fears out of the way and play up your strengths. If you're not sure what your strengths are, I'll help you find them.
-
You are Accepted
I make no assumptions about the size of your family, what kind of relationships you have with your support team, your gender or the gender of your close ones, your lifestyle, or your birth plans or preferences. My practice is inclusive - you are welcome here.
-
You are Top Priority
Concerns, questions, reassurance, validation, and words of encouragement, 24/7. I'm a night owl myself so when your insomnia hits (or your fourth bathroom break of the night), I'm here for whatever you need, whenever you need it. You are not a burden and never too much.
-
You are Believed & You are Safe
I recognize that abuse is rampant in our current culture and that, unfortunately, we all come with our trauma. I'll hold the safest possible space for you while you're in my care, call for explicit consent from myself and your other care providers, and get to genuinely know your preferences (hand off vs hands on, for example). I do this without the need for you to disclose anything about your own history.
